EUR-L2P-AVHRRxx_G

eur-l2p-avhrr17_g
High quality Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) maps derived from the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)-Polar Orbiting Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) have been available since 1981. The multichannel sea surface temperature algorithm (MCSST) has been used to routinely calculate SSTs using a split window approach. Currently this algorithm is applied by the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) to calculate SSTs at a near real-time rate. The MEDSPIRATION project consolidates the NAVOCEANO data to the L2P level over the Atlantic ocean and in near real-time, following the processing model defined by the GODAE High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature Pilot Project (GHRSST-PP).

Gridded products

ERS MWF

ERS mean wind field
Surface wind fields on fixed time/space grids are very useful in many oceanographic applications. To fulfill this need, CERSAT generates the ERS mean wind fields (MWF) from WNF product (swath product of ERS-1 & ERS-2 scatterometers), using an objective mapping technique (kriging). They constitute a homegeneous temporal series of weekly and monthly wind fields, on global 1°x1° resolution grids, over more than 10 years.

NSCAT MWF

ADEOS-2/NSCAT mean wind field
Surface wind fields on fixed time/space grids are very useful in many oceanographic applications. To fulfill this need, CERSAT generates the NSCAT mean wind fields (MWF) from NSP 2.0 product (swath product of NSCAT scatterometer, distributed by JPL/PO.DAAC), using an objective mapping technique (kriging). They constitute a homegeneous temporal series of weekly and monthly wind fields, on global 1°x1° resolution grids.

MWF-QuikSCAT

QuikSCAT MWF
Surface wind fields on fixed time/space grids are very useful in many oceanographic applications. To fulfill this need, CERSAT generates the QuikSCAT mean wind fields (MWF) from L2B product (swath product of SeaWinds on QuikSCAT scatterometer, distributed by JPL/PO.DAAC), using an objective mapping technique (kriging). They constitute a homegeneous temporal series of daily, weekly and monthly wind fields, on global 0.5°x0.5° resolution grids, which extends the ERS and NSCAT series with better spatial and temporal resolution.

MWF Blended

MWF/Blended
In order to enhance the spatial and temporal resolution of surface wind, the remotely sensed wind retrievals are blended to the operational ECMWF wind analyses over the global ocean. The blending method aims at providing 6-hourly gridded zonal and meridional wind speed and stresses at global scale. The spatial resolution of the resulting wind fields is 0.25 deg in longitude and latitude. The blended wind fields are calculated from April 2004 until present. They are considered as test data that will provide useful insight for near real time production of high space and time resolution at global and regional scales. They are estimated from near real time satellite observations (QuikScat scatteromter and SSM/I radiometers) and ECMWF operational wind analysis. The spatial and temporal resolutions are 0.25x0.25 degrees in longitude and latitude, and 6 hours. The blended products are available at synoptic time 00h:00; 06h:00; 12h:00; 18h:00 with a short delay from the real time (24 hours in a nominal mode).

SSMI PSI

NSIDC distributes low resolution frequency brightness temperature data with a resolution of 25 x 25 km, and since 1992, the high frequency 85 GHz data on a higher resolution map (12.5 x 12.5 km). This frequency is used to processed daily sea ice concentration maps at 12.5 km resolution.

Gridded merged sea-ice drift vectors (PSI-Drift)

Polar sea-ice drift map
Few continuous and operationally delivered data about sea-ice drift exist. But this motion can be estimated using various correlation methods between time-lag satellite images (radiometric or radar). The motion vectors provided within this product are processed from backscatter maps as retrieved from the NASA QuikSCAT/SeaWinds scatterometer (product PSI-QuikSCAT from CERSAT) and the SSM/I brightness temperature maps provided by NSIDC.

But this motion can be estimated using various correlation methods between time-lag satellite images (radiometric or radar) . The motion vectors provided within this product are processed from AMSR-E brightness temperature maps provided by IUP Bremen (Germany).

QuikSCAT PSI

QuikSCAT polar sea ice map
Up to now, to follow sea ice evolution, scientists had the choice between SSM/I for global monitoring and SAR images for regional studies. Methods developed at the "Laboratoire d'Océanographie Spatiale" for sea ice detection with the ERS C-band scatterometer, extended to NSCAT and SeaWinds on QuikSCAT ku-band scatterometers provide scientists with another dataset, covering each pole.

Up to now, to follow sea ice evolution, scientists had the choice between SSM/I for global monitoring and SAR images for regional studies. Methods developed at the "Departement d'Océanographie Spatiale" for sea ice detection with the ERS C-band scatterometer, extended to NSCAT and SeaWinds on QuikSCAT ku-band scatterometers provide scientists with another dataset, covering each pole. Generated from the ADEOS/NSCAT scatterometer swath product (NSP 1.5 product, distributed by JPL/PO.DAAC), the PSI-NSCAT product consists of sea ice characterisations, averaged over 3 days and mapped on NSIDC 25 km resolution grids.
