Sentinel-1 A

Mission Sentinel-1A funded by ESA, started in april 2014 and reached its final orbit the 8th of July 2014. CERSAT is involved in the calibration and validation of the level 2 data acquired by the C-band SAR payload.


 This validation activity consists in the production of:Sentinel 1 logo

The performance indicators identified to assess the quality of L2 OCN Sentinel-1 products are inherited from ERS-1/2 missions and extended on some aspects.

Data analysed at IFREMER/CERSAT come from ESA processing chains, it is a subset a all the acquistions performed by the satellite. Notice that IFREMER dataset can miss some the products received at MPC-CC. Monthly inventory description of IFREMER dataset can be browse here

In order to perform these analyses, CERSAT provides different tools and services:

  • colocations with ancillary datasets (models, insitu buoys and satellites).
  • on-the-fly data mining tool
  • capacity of re-processing data using ESA processor (IPF).

The colocations rely on collecting and homogenization of different ancillary datasets. For instance, an important work has been undertaken in the continuity of GlobWave project on the quality assesment of different mooring buoys networks: CDIP , NDBC, OceanSites, ECMWF. The colocation system is built upon Naiad tiling tool for satellite-to-satellite colocations.

kml files containing quicklooks and plots of Sentinel-1A data are daily updated.


 The validation of L2 Sentinel-1 data in the framework of the Mission performance Center involves different parterns such as:
